The event was organized by the College of Arts Letters under the leadership of Dean Mary Bulaong. The program officially started with serenades from the BulSU Symphonic Band, BulSU Angklung, and BulSU Rondalya, followed by messages from the University President Dr. Cecilia S. Navasero-Gascon and guest speaker Professor Jose Reyes Munsayac. Incumbent Supreme Student Council President Marianne Neiky Quitain capped off the festivities in a passionate display of spoken word poetry.

The BulSU administration opted to move the non-working holiday to August 28 instead of its usual date. The University President believes that it is the duty of the academe to instill in the youth the value of culture and to honor those who have given their lives for our independence. She also mentioned that it was observed that during non-working holidays, most of the students can be found just hanging out in malls or playing video games without ever paying attention to what the holiday is all about.

Excellently versed in writing and journalism, del Pilar became widely regarded as the "Father of Philippine Journalism”. He and fellow propagandistas José Rizal and Graciano López Jaena, became known as the leaders of the Reform Movement in Spain. Some of his notable contributions to the Philippine revolution include the foundation of the short-lived Diariong Tagalog and his succession as editor of the La Solidaridad.
